Whim Plantation Museum

The greathouse was built in 1760 and rebuilt several times. The oval shape came in 1793.  It has 30 inch thick walls and 16 ft ceilings.

The restored windmill on the Whim Plantation for processing sugar cane, nearby an animal mill for power, and the tall chimney which served in later years as the exhaust mechanism for the steam generator which ran the mill.

The estate began to raise sugar cane in 1754.  Most labor were slaves, and by 1840 there were 9 slave families, many with three or four generations on the property.

The watch house to the right was to for the watchman who guarded the crops from fires and theft and kept a lookout for runaway slaves.  During the day children played here while their mothers worked in the fields.

This stone mill was used to crush the cane by harnessing the wind.  The rollers inside were fed the cane stalks first in one roller and then out the other.  This crushing extracted the cane juice, which was collected, then cooked, and molasses became the end product.  Molasses is used to produce rum.  The remainder of the canes were used for animal feed.
