 Sailing with Captain and Crew

If you have visited the 1823 Historic Rose Hill Inn bed and breakfast in Kentucky, you probably have already met Emiel and Sharon in our "former life".  You have seen us in action in the "hospitality" roles, the "cooking" roles, and the "maintenance" roles.  Now you can see us in our "vacation roles".  A sailing team we are, and want to share this opportunity with you as well as our new island B&B.

Emiel began sailing as a youth in Holland, was in the Dutch Navy, and holds a Captain's License from the U.S. Coast Guard and a Skipper’s Certification from the American Sailing Assn. He loves the British Virgin Islands (BVI), especially for new sailors, because of its calm waters and steady winds. Emiel enjoys teaching others about sailing.  In addition, he speaks Dutch, French and German, so international guests can feel welcome.

Sharon has been having fun operating Rose Hill Inn for over ten years. In addition, she has experience sailing with Emiel in the South Pacific and much of the Caribbean. Sharon is the first mate, and she loves cooking and providing the food necessary to keep everyone happy and satisfied!

navigation skills

Practicing some navigational skills!

There are many cruising fundamentals to learn while sailing.  If you want to learn, Emiel is very willing to share his skills and understanding with you.  You can learn:

  • navigating

  • sail trimming

  • anchoring, docking and mooring

  • motoring

  • tacking

  • managing the dinghy

  • being at the helm

  • learning sailing etiquette and how to keep wind in the sails

  • raising and lowering the sails

  • tying knots

  • safety at sea

  • ...and more

Sometimes guests just want to relax--what a fun time just chatting in the cockpit as you sail along in the warm winds--or looking towards the horizon for the next island and anchorage.  Actual participation in the sailing is optional!

We know some first-time sailors are worried about "sea sickness".  The BVI provides an excellent framework for a week of sailing, because of the sheltered bays for anchoring and the calmer inter-island sails, but scopolamine patch does wonders.  The more experienced sailors may enjoy the open ocean, and we can do a little of that too if you want to experience this thrill during your week!

NO GRATUITIES PLEASE!  Your enjoyment is our reward.

We look forward to meeting you and sailing with you in the Caribbean.
